The entertainment world is mourning the sudden death of veteran actor Mukul Dev, who passed away at the age of 54 on Saturday. Widely known for his performances in both television and films, Mukul Dev's career began with Mahesh Bhatt’s 1996 movie Dastak. However, few are aware that he had already completed another film before that, which unfortunately never released.
His First Film Wasn't Dastak — It Was “Naam Kya Hai”
The actor’s first-ever project was titled Naam Kya Hai, produced by Amitabh Bachchan's ABCL (Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd). Due to financial trouble faced by ABCL in the late 90s, the film was shelved.
In an interview with Planet Bollywood, Mukul said, “Yes, the film was complete but it could never get a release for itself. ABCL was going through a financial crisis.”
A Call From Jaya Bachchan: "Why Are You Joking With Me?"
In another chat with Lehren TV, he revealed how actress Jaya Bachchan called him personally to offer the film. Mukul initially thought it was a prank.
“I even told her on the phone, ‘Who is this? Why are you joking with me?’” he had recalled. Later, he met her and was signed for the film. He was paid Rs. 75,000 — his first ever income from acting.
His Sudden Passing Shocks the Industry
Mukul had been admitted to the ICU in New Delhi due to illness, and despite efforts by doctors, he could not be saved. His brother, actor Rahul Dev, confirmed the sad news via X (formerly Twitter):
“We are deeply saddened to inform you that our brother Mukul Dev passed away peacefully last night in New Delhi.”
Loneliness & His Final Social Media Post
Actor Vindu Dara Singh revealed Mukul was battling loneliness and alcohol-related issues. His last chilling post on social media said: “If your head explodes with dark forebodings… I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon.”
A Journey Through Films & TV
Despite his unrealized debut, Mukul left a mark with roles in:
- Dastak (1996)
- Son of Sardaar
- Yamla Pagla Deewana
- R… Rajkumar
- 21 Sarfarosh – Saragarhi 1897
Rest in Peace, Mukul Dev
From television to the big screen, Mukul Dev's journey may have had its highs and lows, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of fans and the history of Bollywood.
Rest in peace, legend.
